Cupcakes
Cupcakes are cool again. Cupcake businesses, mainly run by women, are booming as the UK comfort eats and treats itself to a little bit of affordable luxury (they cost on average just £2 a cake). This is thanks largely to the success of New York's infamous Magnolia Bakery - made famous by Carrie Bradshaw and co. in Sex and The City.

Homemade jam
Homemade jams are enjoying a boom, thanks to the love of all foods nostalgic. Waitrose reports a boom in sales of ingredients needed for jam making - particularly plums (up 140 per cent) and preserving sugar (up 181 per cent). Also, the most downloaded website on the supermarket's website is for crab apple jam. Meanwhile The WI, the queens of jam making, report their book The WI Book of Preserves, has become a national sell-out.

Pick 'n' mix
Woolworths may be no longer, but both Marks & Spencer and Waitrose have cashed in on its famous pick 'n' mix section. Thanks to the nostalgic sweet revival, in September M&S launched its own pick 'n' mix stand in 100 stores. Waitrose, meanwhile, is well underway with its Great Sweet Revival, encouraging customers to vote online for the retro sweets they'd like to be able to buy in-store.

Wagon Wheel
They may have gotten considerably smaller in size but early in 2009, the famous Wagon Wheel reintroduced its familiar Western-themed packaging after a slew of protests from traditionalists.

Wispa
Similarly, in 2008, that old childhood favourite the Wispa chocolate bar was re-instated after a campaign on Facebook and Bebo. Makers Cadburys soon realised how high demand was for their fluffy chocolate product – February 2009 the Wispa had generated more than £25 million in revenue.

Madeira cake and Battenberg cake
M&S has gotten firmly behind the nostalgia trip this year – not only did it introduce a pre-packed jam sandwich to its food to go range, the high street favourite has also reinstated its classic pre-packed Madeira and Battenberg cakes. Just right for Sunday evening tea.

Monster Munch
Every kid's favourite brand of 1980s crisps, Monster Munch, found themselves back on the wanted list at the tail-end of last year. After a less-than-successful re-launch in 2004 (when the original packaging was ditched in favour of a more modern design), the corn snacks were reinstated last September, complete with original packaging and everyone's favourite Monster Munch flavour, pickled onion.

Bread pudding
Budget-friendly dessert is a comfort food that is simple to put together, which is why it's making a comeback now in the midst of a recession. Bread pudding is another one of those desserts, and one that escaped us for decades. Making it is so simple that sales of the ingredients have soared - just stir together cream, milk, sugar and eggs, and dump the whole shebang over some slices of bread.

Bird's custard
That good old-fashioned Sunday lunchtime treat, Bird's Custard, is having a healthy comeback thanks to the UK's desire for comfort foods. Premier Foods, the company who own the powdered dessert, said in October this year that sales of the custard were up by 6 per cent on previous years.

Fray Bentos pies
Late in September 2008, Premier Foods announced it was revamping that 70s staple – the tinned pie, otherwise known as Fray Bentos. While to some the idea of a tinned steak and mushroom pie sounds less than appealing, Fray Bentos pies have literally flew off the shelves since their relaunch. Maybe the new packaging, improved recipes, and new tagline - 'Tender' Just Steak – helps.
