Fancy a lasagne sandwich?
Posted on Jul 13th 2010
How many times have you fancied going out for a delicious Italian meal and had to make do with a sarnie? Well carb fans, Tesco has come to the rescue with its lasagne sandwich.Inspired by its creator's student days and the most popular ready meal in the supermarket's Italian Range, the sandwich packs diced beef in tomato and herb sauce plus pasta sheets and a creamy cheddar, ricotta and mayonnaise dressing into two slices of bread.
It packs an equal calorie and fat punch though with 565 calories and 26.9g of fat, so it's probably not one for every day though.
And if gourmets and culinary purists might not be convinced, there's some logic behind Tesco food developer and sandwich creator Laura Fagan's latest concoction, on sale at an introductory price of £2.
'The inspiration comes from my own student days and how certain foods could sometimes taste much better the next day – such as pizza, lasagne and even curry!' she explains.
'Lasagne sandwiches were a favourite of mine back in student days and were really popular with all my mates at university. It was the type of food that could be made very quickly from lasagne leftovers but could really keep you going between meals or equally prove to be the perfect breakfast food after a long night.'
But the big question (apart from whether to have chips with it as well) is what other sandwich filling do you fancy seeing next?
Last month the supermarket produced a 'Singing Sandwich' for the World Cup which played the Ole Ole Ole Ole football chant when the packaging was opened, and two years ago it launched the UK's first ever commercially made sweet sandwich – a banana and chocolate creation.
Surely it's only a matter of time before the pizza sandwich... Let us know what you think.

What a ridiculous product!
Why cant they concentrate on making sandwiches that people actually like that dont taste of dried cardboard by the time they get to us!
I find that Morrisons sell much nicer sandwiches that cater for everyone's tastes - even 'Just Ham' on white bread (not my choice!) but simple so everyone gets fed!

I do like the 'just plain ham'. I get sick of all the complicated sandwiches. This lasagne one just sounds silly!

Cue the masses to complain about calories! Back in my parents days people were happy to get food! None of this "counting the calories crap".
I'll give this a try and no doubt it'll taste fine.
A Yorkshireman.
P.s,
This was created by an ex student. Someone who has got off their arse and done something with their life :D

If you were a recent student your parents did not live in the times when people 'were grateful to have food' certainly not in the UK as that would have been pre 1945. They may have lived in a time where food was appreciated and enjoyed - either as just because it's what you did or because they enjoyed eating. They probably also lived a fairly active life, walking or getting the bus, no cars for the shortest journey. As we became more sedentary in the 70s/80/90s health agencies, food companies and governments began to bombard us with food facts and info - calories were held up as the measure of intake and the meassage was to eat fewerof them. Eat this sandwich if you must once in a while to indulge a bit of student nostalgia, like fish finger sandwiches (my own student favrit, with lashings of ketchup - mmmm) but in terms of health this is a heart attack waiting to happen if eaten too often.

Touché'
It all boils down to two things:
Any item of food is fine in moderation.
To be slim; Move more than you eat.
